Brooklyn, NY – A call to arms by Mayor Bill de Blasio who has asked New Yorkers citywide to come to the aid of Puerto Rican hurricane victims has been taken up by Borough Park’s Jewish community, with a request to bring emergency supplies to a nearby fire station on Monday evening.

An English/Yiddish flyer created by Alexander Rapaport, executive director of the Masbia Soup Kitchen Network, asks Borough Parkers to bring their donations to Engine 201/Ladder 114 located at 5113 4th Avenue in Sunset Park at 6 PM tonight.

The only items being accepted in the citywide rescue effort announced last Friday are diapers, baby food, batteries, first aid supplies and feminine hygiene products.

“At moments like this we should always be concerned about our neighbors and their families,” Rapaport told VIN News.

Rapaport noted that the drive, coming on the heels of Rosh Hashana, is a golden opportunity for individuals to demonstrate their personal commitment to helping others.

“Puerto Rico may be far away but it is important for each of us to feel in the pain of other human beings who are suffering,” said Rapaport.

Assemblyman Dov Hikind said that hurricane relief is something that transcends all cultures and nationalities.

“Helping your fellow man is a Jewish trait,” noted Hikind.  “When someone is having difficulty we always try to do our part to help not just our fellow Jew, but our fellow human beings as well.”

17 other fire stations throughout the five boroughs have also been designated as drop off centers for the mayor’s hurricane relief drive and are accepting donations from 7 AM to 9 PM daily.
