Post on: February 16, 2025As Purim approaches, Masbia Soup Kitchen Network is once again preparing to help thousands of families celebrate the holiday with joy, dignity, and a table filled with food. In the week leading up to Purim, Masbia will distribute extra-large holiday food packages so families in need can properly observe the holiday in their own homes. At the same time, our chefs and volunteers will work around the clock to prepare full Purim meals to be served in our dining rooms. Additionally, with the help of DoorDash, Masbia will be doing thousands of deliveries of food packages on the day of Purim.

This year, Purim begins on Monday night, which means that after the reading of the Megillah, guests will come directly to Masbia to break their fast of Ta’anis Esther. On Tuesday, Purim day, we will serve a complete Purim menu for both lunch and dinner. Wednesday, Shushan Purim, we will once again gather to serve a special festive lunch. And because so many families cannot easily travel, we’ll also be delivering groceries to thousands of households through our DoorDash partnership, making sure Purim reaches people at home, too.

About Purim
Purim is a Biblical holiday commemorating a miraculous event that unfolded for the Jewish people in ancient Persia during the reign of King Ahasuerus. Chronicled in the Book of Esther, also known as the Megillah, this captivating tale is the final installment of the Tenach. The narrative unfolds during a tumultuous period when the villainous Haman plots to annihilate the Jewish population. Through the bravery of Queen Esther and the guidance of her uncle Mordechai, the tide turns as King Ahasuerus ultimately rescinds the decree, thwarting Haman’s sinister plans. In a remarkable reversal of fortune, Haman and his followers meet their demise.
Following this divine intervention, the Jewish community celebrates their deliverance with fervor and gratitude, reaffirming their faith and identity. In honor of this momentous occasion, the rabbis of antiquity established Purim as a day of remembrance and celebration. Purim is observed by reading the Book of Esther, festive feasting, sharing food with friends and family, and extending charity to the less fortunate aka Matanos L’evyonim. It serves as a joyous reminder of resilience, unity, and the enduring power of faith.
Purim, is a one-day holiday, preceded by the Fast of Esther and followed by the minor holiday of Shushan Purim. In 2026, the Fast of Esther is observed on Monday, March 2nd. The festival of Purim will be celebrated from Monday evening, March 2nd, until Tuesday evening, March 3rd.
